Why do we need to renew the playground equipment?

The existing playground equipment is ageing and in need of replacement.

The City of Cockburn manages more than 220 playgrounds and has a renewal schedule where older playground equipment is replaced with new ‘like for like’ equipment. For more information, read our Public Open Space Strategy 2014-2024.

    When will the replacements happen?

The City expects to finish replacing the equipment before June 2024.

How many playgrounds are renewed each year?

Usually around 10 playgrounds are scheduled to receive a renewal each year. This year there are nine playgrounds scheduled for renewal. Last year, the City renewed 14 playgrounds.

Replacement are based on condition reports from yearly inspections.

What is planned for each playground?

The playground renewal program replaces playgrounds on a ‘like for like’ basis. The program does not include adding new things like shade sails, extra seating, or BBQs.

Designs are based on providing 'like for like' or similar types of play elements that currently exist at the playground.

Select a playground on the webpage and view options to see the proposed designs.

Can I purchase the equipment being removed?

Each playground has a warranty which lasts 15 years and when due for replacement can’t be sold. The City breaks down the components to be recycled.

How does the City decide what facilities go at each park?

Each park is classified either as Local, Neighbourhood, District or Regional. This is based on the following:

    • The park’s size
    • How many people are likely to visit
    • How far they are likely to travel to visit.

The park's classification will determine the type of facilities provided. For example, a small local park would not have a BBQ or toilet as visitors would spend less time there and go home to use these amenities.

For more information, read about levels of embellishment for each park type in our Public Open Space Strategy 2014-2024.

How can I request extra facilities at my park?

Requests for additional or new facilities like BBQs are not part of this project.

Requests can be sent to [email protected]

The City will consider customer requests alongside a range of other factors like our Public Open Space Strategy, current and future maintenance needs, and other priorities.

    Can shade sails be considered?

The playground renewal program is for replacing aging equipment with a new 'like for like' version. Shade sails are not part of this schedule and can be requested separately through the City's Customer Request System. Shade sail requests are reviewed against the City's Shade Sail Strategy, other requests, requirements and priorities identified within the existing budget.

    Can rubber soft-fall be included?

The playground renewal program is for replacing aging equipment with a new 'like for like' version. Rubber soft-fall is not part of this schedule and can be requested separately through the City's Customer Request System

Rubber soft-fall requests are reviewed against other budget requests, requirements and priorities identified within the existing budget.

The City considers using rubber soft-fall when universal access is required to specific play elements. For example a rubber path up to a birds nest swing will allow access for people with mobility restrictions.

Can we have a nature playground at our park?

Nature playgrounds are significantly more expensive than standard playgrounds and are therefore installed at regional and/or high use parks only.
