Stage one designs complete

Following the initial consultations undertaken in 2018 and 2020, we prepared a draft design for stage one of the new sporting oval. The design includes a car park, playground, and other park amenities.

We asked the community to provide feedback on the draft design between August and September 2021. Thank you to everyone who shared their comments.

What we did

  • Published the designs and a feedback form on our Comment on Cockburn page
  • Held a drop-in information session in Barrow Park, North Coogee
  • Installed signs around North Coogee
  • Emailed an e-newsletter to prior consultation participants and Comment on Cockburn subscribers who live in North Coogee
  • Provided an e-newsletter to nearby resident associations to share with their networks
  • Emailed local sporting clubs
  • Wrote to residents and property owners within 500m of the site
  • Placed an advert in the Cockburn Gazette

What our community said

  • All 32 respondents said they support the plan to some degree:
    • 44% support the plan as is.
    • 56% support the plan with changes.
  • The top three things respondents like most about the proposed plan are:
    • More green open space in the neighbourhood.
    • Access to sporting amenities close to home.
    • Incorporation of the Moreton Bay Fig Trees and chimney stack in the design.
  • The top three things respondents said they would change about the proposed plan are:
    • Include a full or half-basketball court.
    • Increase parking bays.
    • Improve access and egress integration with the surrounding road network.
  • Other general design comments include:
    • Consider how facilities can be made female-friendly.
    • Use trees on the western side of the oval to shield players from sunset.
    • Consider additional raised seating.
    • Consider a BBQ and sheltered seating area.
    • Consider opportunities, such as public artwork, to beautify the water tank.
    • Consider safety and security measures such as CCTV.

Next steps

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the draft design for stage one. The City has reviewed feedback alongside the project budget and site constraints to finalise the design.

The City initially intended to construct stage one in 2022 before designing stage two. However, the pre-tender estimate exceeded the available budget due to the current global economic conditions of high inflation, high construction costs and a tight labour market.

The City will proceed with designing stage two in the meantime, with the revised vision to build both stages simultaneously. Upon completion of the designs, the City will issue a public tender for construction.
