The Malabar Park BMX & Community Facility, home to the Cockburn BMX Club is undergoing a $8.9M redevelopment.

What will the BMX facility include?

  • A Union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) BMX racing track that can host large events
  • A new 5m start ramp for training and racing
  • New multi-purpose facility that includes areas for Cockburn BMX and Friends of the Community Inc.
  • A new space for the wider community that includes a pump track, playground, public toilet and BBQ area
  • New car parking.

As part of the City’s commitment to community, the Malabar Park BMX & Community Facility will now serve as the home base for Friends of the Community Inc., a local charity dedicated to reinvesting all proceeds from food sales at events back into the local community.

Funding for the redevelopment includes $8.78M from the City of Cockburn, a $100,000 grant for floodlighting from the State Government, through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), and a commitment of $20,000 from the Cockburn BMX Club upon completion of the project.

The State Government, through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, is a major supporter of community sport and recreation facilities in Western Australia. Sport and recreation builds stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities. When we play sport our whole community wins.

Background

As part of consultation on the City of Cockburn’s overall Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Plan 2018-2033, there was strong support to upgrade Malabar Park. Malabar Park is leased by the Cockburn BMX Club and is also used by the wider community.

In response to community feedback, the City has been working with Cockburn BMX Club and Friends of the Community Inc. (a local not-for-profit group who will be relocated to the site) to develop a draft concept plan for upgrading the site. The purpose of the upgrades is to meet the current and future needs of the Club and wider community.

In addition to an improved facility for the growing BMX community, key features of the draft concept design include:

  • a multipurpose community building
  • pump track
  • seating BBQ area.

The project page was visited over 750 times, and the draft concept design was downloaded over 200 times. Overall, 151 responses were collected from local residents, workers from nearby businesses, visitors, BMX club members and other BMX riders throughout the comment period.

Here is a snapshot of what you told us:

  • 98% of respondents said they support upgrading Malabar Park
  • 97% of respondents said the draft concept design for Malabar Park was “good” or “very good”
  • 88% of respondents said they would visit Malabar Park more often if the upgrades were undertaken
  • 26% said that whilst they support the plan, they would change some elements of the draft design if they could (an 8m start ramp was the most popular change).

What Will Happen Next

The City is reviewing the draft concept design in light of the key findings from the comment period. Once the draft design is finalised, the City will seek to secure and finalise funding for the upgrades. This funding is required to develop the detailed design and commence staged construction.
