Background
As part of consultation on the City of Cockburn’s overall Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Plan 2018-2033, there was strong support to upgrade Malabar Park. Malabar Park is leased by the Cockburn BMX Club and is also used by the wider community.
In response to community feedback, the City has been working with Cockburn BMX Club and Friends of the Community Inc. (a local not-for-profit group who will be relocated to the site) to develop a draft concept plan for upgrading the site. The purpose of the upgrades is to meet the current and future needs of the Club and wider community.
In addition to an improved facility for the growing BMX community, key features of the draft concept design include:
In November 2019, we asked for your feedback on the draft concept design. The project page was visited over 750 times and the draft concept design was downloaded over 200 times. Overall, 151 responses were collected from local residents, workers from nearby businesses, visitors, BMX club members and other BMX riders throughout the comment period.
Here is a snapshot of what you told us:
98% of respondents said they support upgrading Malabar Park
97% of respondents said the draft concept design for Malabar Park was “good” or “very good”
88% of respondents said they would visit Malabar Park more often if the upgrades were undertaken
26% said that whilst they support the plan, they would change some elements of the draft design if they could (an 8m start ramp was the most popular change)
What Will Happen Next
The City is reviewing the draft concept design in light of the key findings from the comment period. Once the draft design is finalised, the City will seek to secure and finalise funding for the upgrades. This funding is required to develop the detailed design and commence staged construction.
