Draft Design of the Restroom and Shaded Seating Area at Omeo Park
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedinEmail this link
Background
Omeo Park is located at the southern end of Port Coogee and provides access to the Omeo shipwreck. The Omeo shipwreck is Perth's most accessible wreck for snorkelling and is the starting point of the Coogee Maritime Trail. One of the current challenges with Omeo Park is the lack of public restrooms, which are important in supporting visitation, activation and creating a welcoming City.
Between March and May 2020, we asked about your level of satisfaction with the current amenities at Omeo Park and your priorities and vision for a new amenities building.
What We Heard So Far
Over 700 people visited the project page and nearly 250 people provided input during the consultation period. Most respondents were from North Coogee and visit Omeo Park regularly.
Satisfaction ranked low with the current level of access to toilets, changing facilities and seated shaded areas.
Infrastructure that respondents wanted to see were public toilets (71% in favour), shaded/covered areas (70% in favour) and seating (64% in favour)
Regarding design, the community's priorities are a building that is aesthetically pleasing, unobtrusive, low impact, practical, accessible to all, simple, modern and considers safety and security.
Of the three locations, Location A (north-west corner of the park) was favoured most.
While parking does not impact on the need for these amenities, it was still identified as an issue by local residents. Parking will be assessed separately to this project, given the need to review this on a broader scale and in relation to the future development and planning for the area.
Council considered this feedback and voted to commence design on a restroom building and shaded seated area. Council decided these amenities will be located in the north-west corner of the park. Click here to read the full feedback summary and Council report.
Next Steps
An architect was engaged to develop the designs. Initial draft designs were presented to the Design Review Panel and were then modified to meet their recommendations.
The City is inviting community feedback on the draft designs for the restroom building and shaded seating area to check we got it right.
