Project Update: February 2026

17 February 2026

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to share feedback so far. We’ve received nine responses to date, and the feedback has been largely positive. We have also appreciated the ideas shared about what more we can do to protect the Omeo Wreck. We appreciate your thoughts and are looking into what can be implemented in summers to come!

At this stage, we’re not hearing that the use of the megaphone is causing significant disruption to nearby residents or beach users. Since December 1, including over the summer school holidays, volunteers found the megaphones to be a really helpful tool for communicating with people when unsafe or inappropriate behaviour was occurring around the wreck.

Given the lack of significant negative feedback, the trial use of megaphones will continue until 20 April 2026. We’ll keep monitoring community feedback closely and will let you know if anything changes.

Interestingly, we’ve also received feedback suggesting volunteers should use the megaphones more often. We’re mindful of striking the right balance between protecting the Omeo Wreck and minimising disturbance for beachgoers and nearby residents.

Please keep following this project page to stay in the loop for the remainder of summer, and to hear about our plans for next summer to continue protecting this important local site.
