Background

North Coogee is a vibrant and growing neighbourhood, and we’ve heard from local families that older children and youth would love more recreational options close to home.

In response to community requests, the City is exploring the idea of installing a half-court basketball pad and hoop in the area. Arabella Park has been identified as a potential location, and we would love to hear what you think!

Currently, the nearest basketball hoops are a 25 to 30-minute walk away, at Len McTaggart Park and Powell Reserve in Coogee, or at Manning Park in Hamilton Hill.

Arabella Park already features tiered grassed areas, footpaths, shaded seating along Arabella Loop, and a small playground with climbing and balancing equipment in a sandpit.

With Lucretia Park just five minutes down the hill and offering two playgrounds, the City is considering removing the small play space at Arabella Park and locating the half-court basketball pad in its place.

We’re inviting residents to rank their preferences on options for Arabella Park:

  • Maintain the space as a playground (the existing playground is due for renewal in 2026-27 and if a play space is maintained it will be replaced with a similar play structure next financial year), or
  • Replace it with a half-court basketball pad and hoop, or
  • Consider other alternatives.

No decisions have been made yet. Your feedback will help us decide whether Arabella Park is the right spot for a basketball pad, and if so, we’ll look to include it in the 2026–27 budget.
