Consultation has concluded

Background:

The City has two fenced dog parks at Yarra Vista and Jan Hammond Park. In October 2016, a citywide survey found strong support for more off-lead exercise areas. Ideally, land for fenced dog parks should meet these guidelines:

  • Land of 1.5ha or more
  • Water source for water fountains
  • Parking or capacity for parking spaces
  • Provision for dog poo bag station and general waste bins
  • Preferably away from sports areas and schools so there is no clash of use

We Asked:

We're on the lookout for suitable locations to provide fenced dog parks. We asked you to suggest locations and comment on some locations proposed by the City:

  • Atwell - Brenchley Park (opposite Atwell Oval)
  • Aubin Grove - Durango Park (where the City could fence the boundary of the park)
  • Bibra Lake - eastern side (south of the skate park and opposite the retirement village)
  • South Lake - unnamed reserve (under the powerlines, south of Briggs Road)

You Said:

A total of 112 people completed the survey. There was support for all suggested locations, but concerns were raised about snakes and tortoises at the Bibra Lake location. Feedback is summarised here.

We Did:

This topic was discussed at Council's Ordinary meeting on 12 October 2017. Read the agenda item 18.1, including the community feedback.

The City will proceed with formal consultation about two proposed fenced dog parks at Durango Park, Aubin Grove and at South Lake. Brenchley Park was not considered an appropriate location. A decision on Bibra Lake has been deferred, pending an environmental report into the suggested locations.
