Spearwood Avenue widening

Consultation has concluded

May 2018

Construction is underway on widening Spearwood Avenue from two lanes to four lanes between Beeliar Drive and Barrington Road and will include the bridge over the freight railway line.

This will continue the existing Spearwood Avenue dual carriageway between Stock Road and Barrington Street. It will also provide the correct alignment in preparation for a future second road bridge over the freight railway line, when funding becomes available.

Is this Friendship Way?

Yes, Spearwood Avenue is known as Friendship Way with its commemorative sculptures and signs. These roadworks affect the Croatian part of Friendship Way. The welcome sign on the limestone wall will remain, however the grape vines on the median strip have been removed to make way for the extra road lanes. New trees will be planted on the roadside.

Why upgrade the road?

The community living and working in the City is growing -- particularly Spearwood, Yangebup, Beeliar and Cockburn Central -- and road improvements are necessary to accommodate the extra traffic and to reduce congestion.

What is happening?
The design provides for four traffic lanes with a raised central median island separating opposing flows of traffic. Drainage, street lighting, a new bus stop and a free flowing acceleration lane from Mainsail Terrace will be installed and upgraded. On-road bicycle lanes and off-road shared paths will be provided to improve pedestrian and cycling safety. Details of the proposed road works are shown in the attached plan in the Document Library.

When will road work and construction take place?
The road work is underway and will continue through to January 2019.
