Beeliar Boodjar

The City is located on the traditional lands of the Beeliar people of the Whadjuk group of Nyungar people, and is known as Beeliar Boodjar.

The 2011 Census identified 1,599 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the City with the median age being 20. While this may seem a small number, reconciliation is designed to benefit the entire community.

The City signed a Statement of Commitment to develop a RAP in November 2009 and was the first Perth metropolitan local government to have a RAP approved by Reconciliation Australia by July 2011. We have implemented two consecutive RAP’s in 2011-13 and 2013-16.

The City has made some significant achievements during the first two RAPs including a Nyungar Tourist Trail, Nyungar signage and the use of stories in language, and a range of events over Reconciliation and Naidoc Week.

Reconciliation Australia, which guides the development of RAPs, sees reconciliation as based on five dimensions which all work together: race relations, equality and equity, unity, institutional integrity and historical acceptance. Reconciliation can be achieved through building relationships, connecting people through shared experiences and educating people.
