Background

The City of Cockburn has listened to your feedback on the Health Local Law 2000 and is now seeking your feedback on our proposed Health and Nuisances Local Law 2026.

The local law contains rules to protect the health and amenity of the community. It does this by regulating activities which have a greater potential to cause nuisance or which may be damaging to public or environmental health.

Activities regulated in the health and nuisances local law include the burning of rubbish or other material, the escape of smoke, fumes and other odours, the emission or reflection of light, the keeping or storage of disused or other unsightly materials in front yards, the unsightly growth of vegetation in front yards, the storage of vehicles and machinery in front yards, the escape of stormwater, the disposal and escape of liquid waste, and the escape or erosion of sand and dust.

It further requires that owners or occupiers take reasonable steps to minimise or eradicate mosquitoes, flies, rodents, cockroaches and other bugs such as ticks and fleas on their land or in their premises and restricts the feeding of wild birds or the nesting or perching of pigeons if it would cause a nuisance or public health concern.

The proposed City of Cockburn Health and Nuisances Local Law 2026 will not repeal the current Health Local Laws 2000 in its entirety. The current Health Local Laws will be retained to deal with minimum housing standards, public buildings and lodging houses.

We want to hear your thoughts, to help us adopt a health and nuisances local law that reflects the values and needs of our community.
