Basketball Pad coming to Spearwood Skate Park

Considering the community feedback, budget, and feasible space in the area, the City will install an 8m x 8m basketball pad with a sound-mitigating backboard at the Spearwood Skate Park.

What we heard

We heard from 23 people, and 16 people came to our community drop-in session. Thank you to everyone who had their say.

Key feedback included:

• Benefits -
  1. More outdoor recreation opportunities (especially for young people in the area).
• Challenges -
  1. Noise impacting local neighbours
  2. Safety from balls going astray -
     • Close to a main road
     • Close to bushland
     • Impact of existing park activities
• When asked what design considerations/solutions the City could consider, the following suggestions were noted:
  1. Noise:
     • Use noise-mitigating materials
     • Install the basketball pad furthest away from residents' housing
     • Use existing trees and infrastructure as sound barriers
  2. Stray balls:
     • Installing the pad in the middle/grassed area

Design considerations

The City will install an ‘infinet hoop’ with a noise mitigating backboard secured to an 8m x 8m painted concrete pad.

We will install the pad in the central grass area to maximise distance from houses, minimise disruption to current activities and the potential for balls going astray.

Next steps

Consultation has concluded. Thank you to everyone who had their say.

The City is starting the procurement processes and aims to install the basketball pad in the second quarter of 2024. Construction is expected to take up to five weeks.

Some parts of the car park may be impacted during installation, while the remainder of Spearwood Skate Park will remain unaffected.
