Consultation has concluded
2 March 2018
The City has now installed speed humps in four locations on Ocean Road. The works occurred in July 2018.
In February 2018, the City sought feedback about the proposed installation of a series of speed humps in Ocean Road, Coogee, to reduce vehicle speeds and allow the 60km/h speed limit to be lowered to 50km/h.
To assess the level of support for this project, residents were invited to provide feedback by Friday 2 March by:
Completing the survey below
Sending an email to comment@cockburn.wa.gov.au
Contacting Senior Traffic Engineer David Fu on 9411 3444 during business hours
Background
The City has received complaints about the speed of vehicles using Ocean Road. Additionally, traffic surveys in September 2017 recorded the following results:
The current speed limit on Ocean Road is 60km/h which was appropriate many years ago when the land fronting the road was mainly undeveloped. Now that there are many homes along the road that generate more vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian traffic; and there are more side roads with vehicles turning on/off Ocean Road. So it is appropriate that the speed limit is reduced to the default built-up area speed limit of 50km/h.
The City asked Main Roads WA to reduce the speed limit for Ocean Road but unfortunately that request was refused on the basis that traffic speeds were too high. They did advise, though, that they would review the speed limit if the City installed traffic calming.
So to improve the safety and amenity of Ocean Road the City proposes to install a series of humps along the road. The proposed locations for the humps have been chosen, based on proximity to street lights to ensure that the humps are visible to road users at night, and are at a reasonably regular spacing so that vehicle speeds are reduced to a fairly consistent level along the road.
