Background
Peace Park is a small neighbourhood park in Spearwood. Its purpose is to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and is a place for reflection and quiet contemplation.
In 1986, the City opened Peace Park with the Vice Consul for Japan, Mr T. Otani, performing a commemorative tree-planting ceremony. The City continues this tradition through its yearly Hiroshima Day tree-planting event at different Cockburn parks. The ceremony symbolises peace, unity, and friendship.
Opposite Peace Park is the City of Cockburn Returned and Services League (RSL) Sub-Branch ‘Field of Poppies’ war memorial (off Sussex Street), and together they serve as a reminder of the consequences of war.
Mature pine trees give Peace Park a forest-like appearance, though their thick canopy limits natural light leaving some trees in compromised health. Black Cockatoos are known to feed at the park, so improving tree health and supporting a favourable feeding habitat remains a key priority for the City.
The City has $150,000 in its 2022-23 budget to enhance the park's functionality. Between November 2022 and January 2023, the City invited residents and key stakeholders to share their ideas to guide the project design.
For more information on the feedback received, view the Feedback Summary in the document library.
Officers considered the community's feedback alongside the available budget, an arborist assessment, and other site constraints, and prepared a draft design. Before finalising the design, the City would like to hear your feedback on the draft to help us get it right.
