Why are the playground renewals needed?

    The existing playground equipment is ageing and in need of replacement.

    The City of Cockburn manages more than 200 playgrounds and has a renewal schedule where older playground equipment is replaced with new ‘like for like’ equipment. For more information, read our Public Open Space Strategy 2014-2024.

    Can I purchase the equipment being removed?

    Each playground has a warranty which lasts 15 years and when due for replacement can’t be sold. The City breaks down the components to be recycled.

    What is planned for each of the playgrounds?

    In the playground renewal program, playgrounds are replaced on a ‘like for like’ basis. The program does not include adding new things like shade sails, extra seating, or BBQs.

    When will the playground replacements happen?

    The planned playground replacements are scheduled to take place in the 2022-23 financial year.

    How does the City decide what is included in each park?

    Each park is classified either as Local, Neighbourhood, District or Regional. This is based on:

    • The park’s size;
    • How many people are likely to visit;
    • How far they are likely to travel to visit.

    The type of facilities provided for a park depend on its classification. For example, a small local park would not have a BBQ or toilet as visitors would spend less time there and go home to use these amenities.

    For more information, read about levels of embellishment for each type of park in our Public Open Space Strategy 2014-2024.

    I want to request additional facilities for my local park. How can I do this?

    Requests for additional or new facilities like BBQs are investigated and budgeted as a separate capital project. They are assessed in relation to the park’s classification and similar facilities within the neighbourhood, and prioritised against maintenance and renewal requirement for existing facilities and with all other new requests.

    Request for park upgrades can be sent to [email protected] where they will be assessed against the City's Public Open Space Strategy.

    How many playgrounds are renewed each year?

    Usually 10 to 12 playgrounds are scheduled to receive a renewal each year. This year there are 14 playgrounds scheduled for renewal. Replacements are based on condition reports from yearly inspections.

    What is planned for each playground?

    Designs are based on providing  'like for like' or similar types of play elements that currently exist at the playground.

    To see the proposed designs, select a playground on the webpage and view options.

    Can shade sails be considered?

    The playground renewal program is for replacing aging equipment with a new 'like for like' version. Shade sails are not part of this schedule and can be requested separately through the City's Customer Request System. Shade sail requests are reviewed against the City's Shade Sail Strategy, other requests, requirements and priorities identified within the existing budget.

    Can we have a nature playground at our park?

    Nature playgrounds are significantly more expensive than standard playgrounds and are therefore installed at regional and/or high use parks only such as Bibra Lake Adventure Playground.

    Can I give suggestions on what I would like to be included in the park renewal / upgrade?

    Yes we can pass suggestions on to our Parks Team but due to budget constraints there is not much opportunity for significant variance. Please contact us for more information.

    Can rubber soft-fall be considered?

    The playground renewal program is for replacing aging equipment with a new 'like for like' version. Rubber soft-fall is not part of this schedule and can be requested separately through the City's Customer Request System. Rubber soft-fall requests are reviewed against other budget requests, requirements and priorities identified within the existing budget.

    The City considers using rubber soft-fall when universal access is required to specific play elements. For example a rubber path up to a birds nest swing will allow access for people with mobility restrictions.
