Background
The City receives many requests from residents for traffic management devices to be installed in local streets. The Local Area Traffic Management Policy was developed to define an objective and transparent methodology, using recognised criteria, to evaluate public requests for traffic management treatments to provide a safe and efficient road network.
An assessment found that according to the Policy criteria, a low-cost traffic calming treatment is warranted on Prinsep Road. Initially, speed humps were used on Prinsep Road to calm traffic, however these were removed in 2019 to accommodate traffic flows during a short-term road closure.

In early 2021, the City sought feedback from Prinsep Road residents on whether to reinstate the speed humps or if radar signs were preferred.
What our community said
11 submissions were received during the 24 day comment period:
Of the suitable options, speed humps were most preferred (64%).
Radar signs were not opposed but were perceived to be the less effective option for reducing vehicle speeds.
A handful of participants did not identify a preference and instead put forward their own traffic calming suggestion.
Alternative suggestions included chicanes or other major road network changes such as permanent closures. However, these are non compliant with the City's Local Area Traffic Management Policy, are currently not feasible due to underground services constraints or in the case of permanent closures, are not a viable option given the wider road network requirements.
While the City does not have the authority to change speed limits, some respondents suggested a limit reduction.
As a result, traffic engineers have developed a concept design with a multi-faceted approach to traffic calming, incorporating speed humps, radar signs and a proposal to reduce the speed limit (subject to Main Roads WA consideration and approval).
