Project Update - September 2022

Thank you for having your say on safety in Coolbellup

To guide our planning for the expansion of CCTVs in Coolbellup, the City sought community perspectives throughout July on safety and CCTVs. Thank you to everyone who shared their views.

What our community said

Feedback was open to anyone who lives, works or regularly visits Coolbellup. The City received comments via this project page, hard copy feedback forms, pop-up sessions and face to face discussions.

This page received 249 visits and 61 people participated in the feedback process. All age groups participated and the majority (80%) of respondents live in Coolbellup. Slightly more females (57%) participated than males.

Key findings include:

  • Respondents’ vision for CCTV in Coolbellup is an expanded network that focuses on:
    • Targeting areas of known anti-social behaviour,
    • Protecting infrastructure,
    • Deterring illegal dumping,
    • Balancing efficiency and privacy, and
    • Enhancing the feeling of ‘safety’ in public places.
  • The top three locations respondents feel less safe are:
    • Car parks,
    • On the street, and
    • Around parks and reserves.
  • Some respondents said certain conditions affect how safe they feel. For example, feeling less safe:
    • At night,
    • When not with a dog/pet, and
    • In unlit spaces.
  • The top three locations respondents would place CCTVs in Coolbellup are:
    • Around major intersections, roads and thoroughfares that provide entry to and from the area,
    • Around parks and reserves (including carparks and adjacent community facilities), and
    • Around busy shopping precincts.

Next steps

The community feedback process has now concluded. Project officers are reviewing feedback. The City will consider feedback alongside a range of other factors such as CoSafe data, project budget, and resources. This information will help to guide decisions around CCTV installation this financial year. All CCTV installation will comply with the City's Use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) System Policy.
