The City of Cockburn has heard resident's concerns with the use of the roads in the Banjup area, particularly around safety.

The City has considered feedback from prior engagement activities conducted regarding Banjup roads and would like to understand community sentiment towards a proposed reduction in speed and associated treatments for the Banjup area.

Background

Banjup is a low-density rural location with a unique character. It is surrounded by low and medium density Urban Development and bounded by significant arterial roads, including Rowley Road, Armadale Road, Nicholson Road and the Kwinana Freeway. Due to its location, Banjup has been subjected to increased vehicle volumes on roads that are not designed for this level of traffic.

Proposed Treatments

The City is proposing to discourage non-local traffic to the area by reducing the road speed limits to a more suitable speed for local roads.

Proposed speed reductions include:

  • Lowering Liddelow Road to 70km/hr
  • Lowering all other speeds within the local area to 60km/hr.

A proposed area speed zones map is available in the Document Library.

We intend to achieve this change by implementing traffic treatments such as:

  • Updating road speed signage
  • Changing road surface colours or
  • Area Entry Statements - coloured speed plateaus, coloured slow points, landscaping and lighting upgrades

Technical drawings are available in the Document Library.

The City considers the proposed treatments will reduce non-local travel through the suburb and will encourage this through traffic to travel at speeds more suitable to the local roads.

Next steps

Following community feedback, the City will present a report, including community comments to Council for consideration. Subject to Council determination, the City will seek to deliver the entry statements and have Main Roads Western Australia implement the speed zone reduction by mid-2025.
