The City of Cockburn has received $530,000 in State Government election funding to improve 13 local parks. A budget of $100,000 has been allocated to creating a usable, family-friendly space at Minori Park.

Minori Park is a small public open space located in Yangebup.

In November and December 2021, the City invited local residents to help create a draft design for the space. Letters were dropped to households roughly within a 150m radius and signage was installed on site. Feedback was invited via email, phone, survey and a community drop-in session held at the park on 11 December.

What we heard so far

Participants value Minori Park as a place to come together, play, and socialise close to home. However, respondents feel the space lacks furniture and amenities for older children. The existing play equipment is ageing.

Given the available budget, respondents identified the following priorities:

  • Park furniture (e.g. BBQ, drink fountains, benches, shelter and a picnic setting);
  • Accessibility improvements (e.g. extended hand rails along the stairs, lighting and a pathway for people who use prams and wheelchairs); and
  • Addressing gaps in play equipment for different age groups (in particular, equipment for older kids e.g. half-basketball court).

Next steps

Feedback was considered alongside site and budget constraints to prepare a draft design. The draft design is now complete and we would like to hear your feedback so we can make any final changes. At this stage, the design is only a draft and subject to feedback from the community.

The draft design aims to address key priorities identified by respondents, however given the budget, not every request could be included. Key features of the design are:

  • Basketball pad and ring
  • Shelter and picnic setting
  • Benches
  • BBQ
  • Drink fountains
  • Lighting
  • Accessible footpath connection
  • Extended hand railing on stairs

Note: Cockburn has over 200 playgrounds, which are renewed on a scheduled basis to ensure responsible financial management of assets. The existing playground at Minori Park is scheduled for renewal in the 2024-25 financial year. This will form part of a separate project so it is not shown on the draft design. Further community input on the playground renewal will be sought closer to the date.

    Thank you for your feedback!

    Considering community feedback from late 2021, the City prepared a draft design for Minori Park. To check if we got it right, we released the draft design for further feedback in February 2022.

    Residents around the park were contacted via letterbox drop, signage was installed on site and an e-newsletter was sent to the local residents association.

    Around 50 people visited the Comment on Cockburn page and five people shared their views on the draft. The City received three feedback forms, one email submission and one phone submission during the comment period.

    What we heard

    • The concept design was generally well received, with all feedback form respondents (three) noting they were satisfied with the design;
    • There were mixed reviews about the proposed half-basketball court. While some respondents favoured its inclusion, others raised concerns about loss of green space, potential noise impacts and its proximity to households; and
    • Minor amendments to the lighting locations were suggested via the phone submission.

    Thank you to everyone who shared feedback.

    Next steps

    A final design has been prepared considering feedback from both consultation stages, project constraints and the available budget. View the final design in the Document Library here.

    Key changes in the final design include:

    • Soccer goals (to replace the previously proposed half-basketball court)
    • Minor solar lighting adjustments

    Works are expected to be complete by mid-2022. For any further queries or updates please contact the City on 08 9411 3444 or email [email protected].
