Council Adopts Climate Change Strategy
On 10 September 2020, Council adopted the City’s inaugural Climate Change Strategy 2020-2030, making Cockburn the first council in Western Australia to set a zero waste target.
In keeping with our community’s vision for a better tomorrow, the strategy sets out 14 objectives to achieve carbon neutrality and increase our adaptive capacity:
- Strong leadership
- Net zero emissions
- 100% renewable energy
- Zero non-hazardous waste to landfill
- Reduce energy consumption
- Zero emissions fleet
- Smart City innovation
- Education and collaboration
- Waterwise City
- Conserve biodiversity
- Coastal adaptation
- Increase the urban forest
- Protect community infrastructure
- Enhance health and wellbeing.

Our next steps include undertaking a green hydrogen feasibility study, trialling electric waste trucks, and rolling out smarter and more energy efficient street lighting.
