Our Sustainable and Climate Resilient Future

Have your say to help shape our Climate Change Strategy

The City of Cockburn has a crucial role in creating a more sustainable, climate resilient and liveable future in Cockburn.

Climate resilience is being prepared to readily respond and adapt to future uncertainties (e.g. sea level rise, increased frequency and intensity of bushfires, heatwaves, etc) and sustainability is meeting our current needs without having a negative impact on future generations.

This year, we are due to update our Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Strategy and Adaptation Risk Register by developing a Climate Change Strategy that sets targets for the decade ahead.

This plan will play an important role in shaping our future, so we need your help.

What does a sustainable and climate resilient Cockburn look like to you? What can we do today for a better tomorrow?

    Thank you for your help

In May you shared your vision for a better tomorrow, to help us prepare a Climate Change Strategy for 2020-2030. The project page was visited over 2000 times and we received over 300 responses through surveys, submissions, workshops and listening posts.

Thank you for helping us plan for a more sustainable and climate resilient Cockburn.

    You Told Us

    • Make it a priority to reduce our Greenhouse Gas Emissions
    • Aim to be a carbon neutral City
    • Keep the community informed so they can adapt to the impacts of a changing climate
    • Reduce the heat island effect through planting more trees
    • Be a waterwise City
    • Become leaders who take action and embrace innovation

Click here to read the full summary in the upcoming September Council Meeting Agenda.

    What Happens Now?

Feedback from our community has helped to inform a draft Climate Change Strategy, which includes a resilience roadmap that sets targets to achieve carbon neutrality and increase our adaptive capacity.

The Climate Change Strategy will be presented to Council at the 10 September Ordinary Council Meeting.

Once the Strategy is adopted, the City will start implementing the action plan. Over the next year, the City will undertake a green hydrogen feasibility study, an electric waste truck trial, and upgrade to smart, energy efficient, street lighting.

The City will also continue to offset its fleet emissions, deliver sustainability and environmental education programs and maintain its gold waterwise status.

For more information on this project, please contact the City of Cockburn on 08 9411 3444 or customer@cockburn.wa.gov.au.
