New Local Laws endorsed by Council

11 June 2026

Thank you to everyone who participated in community engagement on the City’s proposed new local laws.

The proposed new local laws were presented to Council at the May Ordinary Council Meeting (OCM) on 12 May 2026, where Council resolved to adopt five of the new local laws, and resolved to endorse one other local law.

The local law which was not adopted, the Public Places local law, requires Governor approval. Once this is done, it will be brought back to Council for final adoption.

Following this resolution, they five local laws which were adopted will be published in the Government Gazette in the coming months, and local public notice of their gazettal will be given.

The local laws will come into operation 14 days after publication in the Government Gazette.

Following gazettal, a copy of the local laws will be sent to the Joint Standing Committee on Delegated Legislation (JSCDL), a Parliamentary committee who will scrutinise each local law to ensure it is lawful. If it isn’t, they may disallow it or require the Council to give undertakings to change the local law in the future.
