To improve safety, the City of Cockburn is installing anti-climb structures on the Othello and Maraboo Bridges at Ngarkal Beach in North Coogee. The anti-climb structures will be installed on the northern side of Maraboo Bridge, and both sides of Othello Bridge to prevent swimmers from jumping off.

Two design options have been prepared and artwork themes are being explored for some perforated panelling. These panels form part of the anti-climb structures.

Have your say

We would like to hear your thoughts on the structural design options and artwork themes for the perforated panels.

Following community consultation in early 2022, the City has been working with architects to finalise designs for the new anti-climb structures for the Othello and Maraboo bridges.

    Design outcomes

In line with community preferences, architects opted for an open-structure design (Design A) and perforated panels with marine-themed shapes. Additional design feedback has been considered where viable from an engineering, maintenance and budget perspective.

    Next steps

    Consultation has concluded.

The City expects to go out to tender for construction in early 2023. The City anticipates the anti-climb structures to be installed by late 2023; however, due to the current global economic conditions, timing is subject to material availability and budget.

    Thank you for your feedback

The City asked for your feedback on two design options for new anti-climb structures on the Othello and Maraboo bridges in North Coogee. We also asked which artwork themes we should consider for some perforated panels, which will form part of these structures.

    What we heard

Project communications were sent to over 500 North Coogee residents and signs were installed on site. More than 350 people visited the project page and 88 people provided feedback. Thank you for having your say.

    • Design A (open design anti-climb structure) is the preferred design (78.5% prefer Design A; 4.5% prefer Design B; 2.5% prefer both; and 14.5% prefer none of the options).
    • Why respondents prefer Design A:
      • Aesthetics,
      • Perceived cost,
      • Design (most difficult to climb),
      • Lower maintenance, and
      • Safety (open design appears safer to walk through in periods of low light).
    • ‘Marine’ is the preferred (73%) artwork theme for the perforated panels.
    • Why respondents prefer ‘marine’ theme:
      • Fits with the area.

    Next steps

Key findings have been reviewed will be considered in the final design process. When available, a final project update will be detailed on this page. The upgrades are expected to be installed in the 2022-23 financial year.
