Consultation has concluded

The City of Cockburn has received $530,000 in State Government election funding to improve 13 local parks. $50,000 is being allocated to a new nature play area in Tapper Park.

What we heard so far

The Atwell Community Association has undertaken early engagement with local parents and playground users to gather ideas for the nature play elements. The following priorities emerged:

  • Nature play elements suitable for young children;
  • Positioning the play area close to other amenities; and
  • Fencing around the play area.

Considering these findings, the City will be installing a fenced nature play area targeted to young children (<6

The Atwell Community Association has undertaken early engagement with local parents and playground users to gather ideas for the nature play elements. The following priorities emerged:

  • Positioning the play area close to other amenities; and
  • Fencing around the play area.

Considering these findings, the City will be installing a fenced nature play area targeted to young children (<6 years). The budget allows for the installation of several nature play elements. We need your help to guide the next steps of the design process.

    Thank you for your feedback

The City recently asked for your input to help shape a new nature play area in Tapper Park. We dropped letters to houses near the park, sent an e-newsletter to Atwell Comment on Cockburn subscribers, and liaised with the local resident group.

We received input from 105 people. Thank you for your having your say.

    What our community said

    • Main play features: Respondents prefer the mini boat and infant swing.
    • Supplementary play features: Respondents prefer the log steppers and interactive play wall.
    • Location: Respondents prefer the nature play area to go on the western side of the park (near the existing playground, parking and picnic setting area).
    • The majority of respondents said they intend to use the new nature play area.

View the feedback summary in the Document Library here.

Prior discussions with local parents found that playground fencing is a top priority, and will be incorporated into the play area design.

    Next steps

Consultation is now complete. Key findings have been considered alongside budget and site constraints to prepare the final nature play design. View the drawing in the Document Library here.

Installation of the nature play area is expected to commence in mid-2022 subject to site, and weather conditions.
