Thanks for your feedback on the draft

The draft design for Radiata Park was published for feedback throughout July and August 2021. Thank you to everyone who shared their comments and visited us at the drop-in session.

The vast majority of respondents were local, with 53 of the 60 respondents residing in Aubin Grove. The majority of feedback indicated support for the proposed design and some key feedback themes emerged:

    • Toilets: While toilets were not included in the draft design, some requested they be considered to prevent unhygienic behaviour and support visitation needs. Others noted concerns about their potential inclusion and how they might impact sightlines and social amenity.
    • Tree houses and cubbies: Some respondents suggested the central basin be used as a cubby or tree house area. This is not recommended as this area is for drainage, collecting potential pollutants from the surrounding road network. Revegetation with native species is a more suitable option.
    • Basketball half court: The provision of a small court was welcomed by many, however some noted concerns about potential noise.
    • Skate elements: The provision of skate elements was welcomed by many. Some noted the elements were too small or insufficient for the needs of young people in the community. Conversely, some respondents were concerned about the potential noise from the rail element, designed to encourage ollies/jumps. A “wedge to wedge” element with a grindable edge could be considered instead to minimise noise associated with jumps.
    • Lighting and CCTV: Additional lighting and CCTV was requested; however, lighting allows activities with associated noise impacts to continue into the evening so was excluded for this reason. The provision of CCTV within Cockburn is guided by the Use of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) System Policy.

Community feedback will be presented to Council for consideration at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 9 September 2021. Please read the full feedback summary and Council Meeting Agenda for more information.

Feedback will be considered in the decision-making process, alongside other factors such as strategic planning and policy implications.

    Check out the draft design

Using community feedback from our workshops, Ecoscape has created a draft design for Radiata Park. The design aims to provide an inclusive space for all, including people aged 15-24.

The draft includes the following key features:

    • drinking fountains
    • tree planting
    • informal seating
    • relocation of fitness equipment to shady area
    • retention of green space, existing bbqs, shelter and playground
    • 3 on 3 basketball court
    • junior pump track
    • mini plaza-style skate elements
    • 'Ninja Warrior' style obstacle course

Click here to view the draft design.

A number of constraints had to be considered such as the drainage area located in the middle of the park and budget.

You can find out more about the draft design at our community drop in session on Saturday 31 July, between 9am and 11am at Abun Grove Sport and Community Facility. We look forward to seeing you there.

    Workshop Findings

The City engaged Ecoscape to gather community insight on possible youth amenities for Radiata Park. A series of workshops were held between December 2020 and March 2021, involving over 130 young people and Aubin Grove residents. Together participants created a vision for Radiata Park.

Several key themes were identified through the workshop process, including:

    • Participants value family-friendly, green open spaces, where all are welcome.
    • Young people would like to see skateboarding amenities, pump tracks and multi-courts.
    • The design can be multi-purpose, featuring places to skate, scooter, ride bikes, climb, jump and explore.
    • The design will be constrained by space and the central drainage area.
    • The design should complement existing uses.

Click here to read the full summary. Workshop feedback was presented to Council at the April 2021 Ordinary Council Meeting. A resolution was made to commence a concept design for a small youth facility based on the workshop findings.

    Thank you for your input!

In May 2020, the City sought feedback on a proposal for a skate park in Aubin Grove. The project received lots of interest, with over 1200 project page visits. The City received 290 feedback forms and 21 submissions (excluding those that also did the survey).

Our community said they value open spaces that are safe, family-friendly and complement existing amenity. Radiata is a popular community destination and the preferred location for enhancements. While many respondents and young people were eager to see skateboarding amenities, an array of alternatives were put forward for further consideration.

Feedback and a petition were considered by Council at the September 2020 Ordinary Council Meeting. Council made a resolution to undertake further community consultation with young people and local community members. The consultation will explore options for Radiata Park that meet the needs of young people and the community.
